Scope and content

Series consists of records documenting Dr. May Cohen’s personal life. The bulk of the material is Dr. May Cohen’s personal correspondence with family and friends. Included are numerous letters exchanged between May and Gerry Cohen over the summer months while they were in medical school. Gerry Cohen worked for many summers at Muskoka Lodge, playing music with his band, the Sunny Qualer Band, to pay his way through med school. May joined Gerry at Muskoka Lodge in the summers immediately proceeding their marriage (1952-1953) and worked as a waitress there. In the summer of 1954, she worked at Camp Naivelt as the camp physician.

Also included are photographs, a speech May delivered at a New Fraternal Jewish Association (NFJA) event on the occasion of the 75th birthday of her father (Sam Lipshitz), an issue of NFJA’s newsletter Fraternally Yours, May’s CV, and a personal reflection May wrote relating to her breast cancer diagnosis. Finally, included is a poster for a wrestling match in Bracebridge, ON.
