General note
The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine was formed in 1936, and acted as the precusor to the Section of Women Physicians. One of the main aims of the Ladies' Auxiliary was to assist doctors in furnishing the Academy (through buying books and periodicals for the library), entertainment planning for conventions and general meetings, and hospitality to visiting doctors' wives. During the Second World War, the Ladies' Auxiliary supported the Red Cross by buying gauze and making dressings. In addition, the Auxiliary provided nourishment to donors at the blood clinic, and organized clothing donations.
